URBAN HOMESTEAD

Homesteading Class Schedule

Hands-on learning at our working farm — organic gardens, greenhouse, farm animals, and a farmhouse kitchen.

What is Urban Homesteading?

Urban homesteading is the practice of producing food and other goods close to home — whether you live in a condominium with a sunny balcony or have acres of land to tend. Our working farm demonstrates sustainable living practices including organic gardening, animal husbandry, food preservation, and the timeless kitchen arts that nourish both body and spirit.

Sourdough Bread Baking

Heritage & Heirloom Whole Grain Breads

Learn to feed and maintain a sourdough starter, mix and shape your dough, and understand the fermentation process that gives sourdough its distinctive flavor and texture. You'll leave with an active starter and your own dough ready to rise, shape, and bake at home. Home Cheesemaking

A hands-on introduction to making fresh cultured cheese at home. Students work in pairs — each pair shares one pot and one full gallon of organic cow's milk — and each person goes home with approximately half a pound of fresh cheese. Bring your own jar and you can also take home the cultured whey, a wonderfully nutritious byproduct. Whey is perfect for smoothies, soups, and traditional soaking — soaking grains and legumes in whey neutralizes phytic acid and lectins, making them far more digestible and their nutrients more bioavailable. Your chickens and animals will love it too. Everything else is provided — just bring your enthusiasm and a jar.
